The Coelacanth Journal no.7 High-Rise, now available at Luminous Books.

”..It is interesting to consider that where ‘high-rise’ connotes modern living, ‘visionary’ planning, forwards..upwards..heaven-bent etc, the damning ‘tower-block’ takes us more into JG Ballard’s realm of the catastrophic (as explored in his 1975 novel, High- Rise), and the tortuous idea that as ancient an imperative it is for us to rise, we must always fall.” Phoebe Blatton, Editor.

This issue includes a reading list by Luminous Books on the theme of High-Rise.

Trip to Hampstead yesterday yielded two beautiful John Fante editions from Black Sparrow Press and an amazing glimpse of Jupiter with three of its main moons through a telescope at the Hampstead Observatory! Jupiter’s four main moons are called Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. The planet has 50 moons in total plus 14 provisional moons… Im not sure which ones we saw but they were beautiful!

The Hampstead Observatory is open as part of BBC Stargazing Live but is also open regularly for solar viewing and special events throughout the year.

Ticket stub marking a page of Notes on Nationalism found inside George Orwell’s Decline of the English Murder and other essays (Penguin Books,1965).
This collection ends with the fascinating essay Why I Write which begins:
“From a very early age, perhaps the age of five or six, I knew that when I grew up I should be a writer. Between the ages of about seventeen and twenty-four I tried to abandon this idea, but I did so with the consciousness that sooner or later I should have to settle down and write books.”
